The Green Chicks?

Well, what can we say? Through the hilarious mispronunciation of our name, people are starting to recognize us as the Green Chicks. In the end, people figure out that Green Chic and Green Chicks have two completely different meanings, but still somehow it has stuck to us like glue. No, we are not complaining! Well, maybe at first... but really what better thing can happen than to get a nickname from your customers? Exactly. We are pleased and a little proud that our customers heart us so much!

Lookout!

Here we come!
This last month has been so full of fun and exciting times. However, over the next 30 days we have some even more exciting things coming out. Green Chic Bag Co. will be launching a new design and a totally new product! Seriously, you are all going to love it. I can't wait to share it with you.

Now I know there are a few of you that are dissapointed in the sell out of two (almost three) very popular patterns, i.e. Valerie and Carly (almost Paige). Unfortunately we can no longer get these fabrics. Keep checking back though, we are putting out some new styles and we are attempting to find similar designs.

This next month is going to bring a lot of media/press and events. We have quite a line up coming and we can't wait to see the reviews. If you happen to be in the Portland area, we would like you to stop by and see us at America's Largest Holiday Bazaar at the Portland Expo Center November 28-30 and Dec. 5-7. It is going to be tons of fun and you won't want to miss out.

Albertsons stores pulling BYOB incentives

I am constantly amazed by the ability of big business to play down the important of eco-friendliness. On a recent grocery trip to my local Albertsons grocery store I was stunned when made aware that they were no longer giving $0.05 off per BYOB. Of course, I asked the clerk if she knew why this was, and she did not. Well, that answer simply would not work for me because I have people (you) to answer to. When I asked the manager on duty, I was simply told to call corporate as she wrote down the number for me.

You better bet I called! Unfortunately, I am not important enough to speak to anyone and only received a voicemail in which to leave a message. My message was done and now I had to wait for a response. No response after day one, or day two, or day three. Finally! Day four brought news, but not from corporate, the store manager of my local store. It was explained to me that my inquiry was not important enough to receive a response from the person I left a message with. So, here I was on the phone with the manager once again.

Very kindly, the store manager described that Albertsons had removed it's discount for the reason that many cities are starting to charge for the use of store plastic and paper bags. Instead of charging it's customers $0.05 to $0.20 per paper or plastic bag, Albertsons had generously (sarcasm) decided offer these bags free of charge and thereby revoked their BYOB discount.

To sum it up, Albertsons grocery stores (according to the store manager) has made the decision to continue its offerring of paper and plastic bags free of charge whilst disouraging the use of a more eco-friendly option of reusable bags.

Is Albertsons promoting a wasteful environment?

If you are concerned about their "corporate decision" please feel free to write them a letter at the address below:

Suprise!

The ladies at Green Chic are blushing.....

Why? A few days ago, while purusing the wonderful yet painful (I'll explain later) www, we observed that Green Chic Bag Co. had been Discovered! No contact had been made with us, as were previous media blurbs, it was just done -with a lot of magical fairy dust! Marjorie Skinner at the Portland Mercury MOD did more than a blurb, she really truly loved us.... and we felt the love! BTW, we know... not the greatest picture. We are trying to figure out this whole product picture thing :)

I'm as environmentally conscious as the next southeast Portland New Seasons shopper, but I can't fully resolve the whole reusable grocery bag thing, simply because I get so much darn use out of paper grocery bags, most notably as a vessel into which I empty out my cats' litter boxes. Still, if I had no cats (or maybe cats with a less prolific output) I would be all over it--as it stands I just don't take a bag unless I need one (I'm on a bike half the time anyway, and I have a huge purse I can wear messenger style), and I shovel cat poop into every single one that I do take. It was of course Anya Hindmarch who made the biggest splash with her "I Am Not A Plastic Bag" bag, and since then all sorts of options have popped up. If you want to take it to the next level of conscientious shopping, you should no doubt be buying your reusable grocery shopping bags from a local company, right? Enter Green Chic Bag Co., whose large, machine washable bags are sturdy enough to last a long time, and roomy enough to haul your haul (plus they also have produce bags). They come in a wide range of patterns, so you can pick something you like without having to tote around a dorky NPR or Whole Foods logo bag or whatever.

Thanks Marjorie!

Going Green

In our area, there have been many stores that have started charging for plastic and paper bags and others that are considering the tactic. Many cities have outlawed the use of such bags. Just over a year ago, the three of us came up with an idea; an idea that we felt would change reusable grocery bags for everyone. We saw what was available in our local grocery stores and felt that there was still much more to be desired from the thin and plain black bags. Not only that, but we heard many complaints that people felt uncomfortable taking bags from one store into another competitor store.

The three of us gave it a "go". We went to our local fabric store and bought what we thought we needed. One person would sew, one person would market, and one person would pick the materials..... well, we all had full time jobs and growing families and the business slumped out of production for roughly a year. It all began again, however, after we were gifted a very nice sewing machine and one of us had a little time on our hands.

Dedication, commitment, integrity, and drive kept us in this game. We are excited, elated even, to get this dream on the road. We spent the first two weeks doing demos, fixing patterns, testing bags, getting opinions, and looking at our competition. With a few tweaks we finally are positively confident that our end product is stylish and fashionable, durable, and comfortable. Taking a few bags for ourselves, we decided to experiment. Go to the stores! We couldn't believe how many compliments we were getting. People were actually stopping us to ask us where we got the bags. Time to get business cards! We would get stopped by customers, employees, even the stores we bought the materials from would stop us.

Our plan was to build a good stock and then do an online store. Well, online stores take time.... lots of time. So does trying to get search engines to find you, people to click on you, and all that fun stuff. I am really not even sure if we have done everything possible to make our site searchable to all who search. But, we are there and we are waiting.

Who knew that selling online would be difficult. You hear all these stories about people making a living selling products online. We sell more to people that see us with our bags than we do online. We have some ideas to perk things up a little though. Ideas that are going to change our future for the better, I am sure of it!

We are Green Chic Bag Company. We are three friends that came together to make an incredible product available in order to reduce the number of plastic bags and increase the prospects of reusing items again and again. We stand strong behind our values, mission, and product. We are dedicated to this cause, in a stylish way.

Our next move, Marketing. Finding ways to sell your product is overwhelming. We are all learning each others' originally assigned duties, crosstraining. Here's to ads, search engines, business cards, sales, and everything else the marketing entails. We will survive! LOL
